The Boston Symphony Orchestra and their music director Andris Nelsons announce their upcoming album, on which they present their acclaimed Shostakovich symphony cycle to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer's death in 1975.

Since his death, Shostakovich's stature has only continued to grow and he is now recognized as one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. Moreover, his relationship to the Soviet regime continues to fascinate. Was he a loyal servant or an embittered closet-dissident? For Nelsons, who experienced the Soviet system firsthand growing up in Latvia and who has spent much of his career studying and conducting Shostakovich's music, these questions are irrelevant: "The greatness of his music lies beyond politics. It speaks to people whether they know the times he lived in or not," says Nelsons.

This Grammy-winning exceptional anthology contains brand-new recordings by pianist Yuja Wang, violinist Baiba Skride and cellist Yo-Yo Ma in the concertos, while the Lady Macbeth cast is headed by Kristine Opolais, Brenden Gunnell, Peter Hoare and Günther Groissböck.

"This Nelsons cycle started with a bang - namely the most electrifying recording of the Tenth Symphony we've had in almost half a century. The excellence continues...Nelsons rejoices in the skewed logic and dotty tangents but does so with a gripping hold on the symphonic argument - tentative though that sometimes is. The impetus and tautness of his account intensify cohesion. And it is fabulously engineered" Gramophone Editor's Choice September 2018 [Symphonies 4 & 11]

Grammy Awards
61st Awards (2018)
Winner - Orchestral Performance [Symphonies 4 & 11]

"Powerful and beautifully crafted, this recording - the first from the relationship between DG and the Boston Symphony under Nelsons - is a hugely impressive sign of just what this ensemble/maestro partnership may go on to achieve" Gramophone Orchestral Winner 2016 [Symphony 10]

Grammy Awards 59th Awards (2016)
Best Orchestral Performance [Symphonies 5,8,9]

"Nelsons is spry and precisioned and his insistence on super-keen rhythm pays off big-time...The Fifth Symphony is quite marvellous...and like the Tenth should dominate the catalogue for a long time to come...To say that it brings the house down is something of an understatement." Gramophone [Symphonies 5. 8. 9]

"Nelsons's scrupulous, atmospheric attention to dynamic detail, the Boston Symphony Orchestra's sophisticated beauty and perfect engineering combine to give us finetuned mastery in Shostakovich's last and most refined symphony, the Fifteenth." BBC Music [Symphonies 1, 14, 15]

"This interpretation of the Leningrad pulls it all off with hyper-sophisticated playing and an alternation of tense atmosphere with electrifying release. Nelsons wins such beautiful phrasing, both collectively and individually." BBC Music Recording of the Month June 2019 [Symphonies 6 & 7]
