This album offers a survey of American music composed for violin and piano from 1980 to 2010 through the lens of masterpieces by four American composers who have been distinguished by the highest honors of their profession: George Tsontakis, Chen Yi, Sebastian Currier, and Nathan Currier.
Their compositions, ranging from solo and chamber works to symphonies and works involving electronics, represent some of the most important musical trends of the last 50 years, and constitute significant contributions to contemporary literature. Collectively, their lives and careers extend from post-war China to 21st-century America, and their individual creative voices have been shaped by the major political, social, and cultural events of this period, including China's Cultural Revolution and today's global climate issues. While the four composers are American, their careers are international, with all of them having spent significant time overseas, and having received glowing plaudits worldwide. In fact, two of the works were composed while the composers were living abroad - Chen's Fisherman's Song in China and Tsontakis' Three Sighs, Three Variations in Italy.
