After the critically acclaimed Rite of Spring (ONYX4182) the award - winning team of Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO continue their survey of the Stravinsky ballets with The Firebird. As with the earlier album, the coupling is a fascinating one. Stravinsky was Rimsky's star pupil, and his influence on Stravinsky can be detected clearly in the opulent and exciting score of The Firebird. Rimsky's Golden Cockerel suite was arranged from music from his 1909 opera based on the story by Pushkin.

"This is a sparkling recording, one that has been cleverly put together to show Stravinsky's indebtedness to his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, with these two works occupying the same sound world as each other. This is an excellent and colourful recording of both works, one which clearly shows the link between the two composers and one which is captured in the wonderful acoustic of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The notes, which refers to the link between tutor and pupil by Daniel Jaffé are also very good, making this a most desirable recording." MusicWeb
