Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
Rocket Science

[ Eone / CD ]

Release Date: Friday 15 September 2017

Far from being a wistful trip back in time, 'Rocket Science' sees this Grammy Award-winning quartet creating some of the most forward thinking music of their long, storied career.

While all manner of genres come into play from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable.

"It's been some time since I caught onto a Béla Fleck and The Flecktones album, with the last one I recall being the triple disc extravaganza 'Lost Worlds' from 2003, although I do believe they've had a good dozen or so releases over the years in total. Anyway, the seminal line-up of Béla himself, Victor Wooten, Future Man and Howard Levy are now back with 'Rocket Science' out on eOne Music and distributed locally through Shock. It's "classic" Flecktones, full of bluegrass, fusion and jazz and featuring some of the most intricate banjo and electric bass work you'll hear. Far from being a mere "chops fest" though these pieces are full of vision and display a vibrancy that only these four musicians can conjure. Certainly, 'Rocket Science' sees the quartet at the height of their game and as Béla says, 'I know that we haven't even come close to exhausting the possibilities with this record, but we sure went deeper than we ever had before.'"

"The compositions are all quite bold, showcasing everyone's versatility and highlighting the collective power of the band. Flecks' impressive banjo style somehow works in the foreground and background simultaneously..."
