Philip Glass composed this work for Robert McDuffie in 2009. The soloist was interested in music that would serve as a companion piece to Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Instead of the usual cadenza, Glass wrote a number of solo pieces which could be abstracted from the work. In the concerto they appear as a prelude to the first movement and three "songs" that precede each of the following three movements.

"McDuffie responds to Glass's trademark arpeggios and harmonic cycles - embedded, methinks, with sly references to Vivaldi - with an energetic verve that suggests he really believes this is the most important music on the planet; likewise, Alsop's LPO enjoys ricocheting against his catchy melodic hooks and occasional outbreaks of chromatic mayhem."
