'The Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night' is a dark bliss-out that folds the eerie guitar epics of the Montreal band's breakthrough into a wall of atmospherics, with a toughened exterior, making for a haunting & brilliant listen.
'The Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night' is the third album for husband-wife duo, Jace Lasek & Olga Goreas.
Calling up on the influence of E.L.O. plus finer parts of the Alan Parsons Project in its orchestration, The Besnard Lakes also hints at the Beach Boys (more Dennis than Brian) & Fleetwood Mac (more Peter Green than Lindsay Buckingham), or even Roy Orbison re-imagined as a rollicking, snakeskin-booted Mazzy Star.
Tracked & recorded with their regular live band on a 1968 Neve console (rumoured to have been used to record portions of Led Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti'), '...are the Roaring Night' is a dense, ambitious recording. It is a dark bliss-out that folds the eerie guitar epics of the Montreal band's breakthrough into a wall of atmospherics, with a toughened exterior, making for a haunting & brilliant listen.
"A magnificently oceanic meld of Beach Boys harmonies; My Bloody Valentine tidal waves; and Phil Spector girl-group siren songs shot through with soaring guitar."
-Rolling Stone
"The highlight is "Chicago Train", a demented lullaby that culminates in a wave of fuzzed-out riffs..."
-SPIN
"An impressive array of crunchy guitar tones courses throughout the album, pushing forward two-part epics... It contains many small refinements to the band's songwriting & production skills."
-PITCHFORK
"music to get lost in, a rapturous sound that invites comparison to the dense studio recordings of Phil Spector & the Beach Boys."
-CHICAGO TRIBUNE
"Hammer of the gods post-rock cinema."
-STEREOGUM
"The dark heart of Canada has landed, burning within the psychedelic dirge-pop of The Besnard Lakes."
