'Syntheology' was written, produced and mostly played by McCallum, one of our most talented young musicians. It's a meeting of two ideas: synth, meaning synthetic or artificial, and theology refers to organic or philosophical ideas.
"I knew this would be a heavy piece of art. Following on from one of my favourite NZ soul albums with his last one he hasn't lost any momentum, with the production and musicality really grabbing me... beautiful melodies and images... check it for yourself, you'll definitely find you own vibe. It inspires me to want to make music!"
- Devin Abrams, Shapeshifter/Pacific Heights
Lewis McCallum is one of our most talented young musicians, coming up through the jazz scene before taking a left turn with his acclaimed debut album, 'Wake' - a favourite of Benji B, Domu, Paul Pre and many more!
'Syntheology' is the title of his highly anticipated new album and it is a meeting of two ideas: synth, meaning synthetic or artificial, and theology refers to organic or philosophical ideas.
This plays out on the album as the noted sax player McCallum uses a plethora of old & new synths and other computer generated sounds as raw materials, but throws them around with a swirling organic approach.
'Syntheology' also features guest vocal appearances from Francis Kora (Kora), Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle), Tama Waipara (Nathan Haines), Cherie Mathieson (Mark de Clive-Lowe, Dego (4Hero)), Esther Stephens (Solaa) & Deva Mahal, from New York via the internet!
Lewis McCallum has lent his considerable talents to many projects over the recent years, from jamming with Mark de Clive-Lowe in the early days, to being heavily involved in Julien Dyne's highly regarded solo album Pins & Digits & the Opensouls debut album Kaleidoscope; as well as featuring as part of ex-Trinity Roots drummer Riki Gooch's "superband" Eru Dangerspiel.
'Syntheology' was written, produced and mostly played by McCallum. It is released on his own Finch label.
