'Kali Sultana' (Black Queen) is the latest recording from French Internationalist and master oud guitarist, Thierry Titi Robin. Split into two parts, seven movements and three interludes, 'Kali Sultana' is an intense and exhilarating work that draws inspiration from a myriad of landscapes and cultures.
Like so much of Titi Robin's music, 'Kali Sultana' highlights the musical roots of his personal circumstances and inspiration. The journey visits France, North Africa, the Middle East and North India but most pertinently reflects the gypsy heritage that Titi has become somewhat an ambassador of in his home country of France.
As a leading gypsy music exponent for the best part of thirty years and perhaps best known for the seminal album 'Gitans', it was no surprise that he was nominated for a BBC World Music Award in 2008 and performed at WOMAD Australia and New Zealand as well that year.
