Modest Mussorgsky owes his reputation to three compositions in particular: his opera Boris Godunov, his orchestral fantasy Night on the Bare Mountain and his descriptive collection of solo piano pieces entitled Pictures at an Exhibition. It is indeed an intriguing fact that these works achieved worldwide fame not in their original form, but in versions crafted by other composers. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov created his own orchestrations of Boris Godunov and Night on the Bare Mountain, Anatoly Liadov arranged much of the unfinished opera The Sorochinsky Fair, and Maurice Ravel gave to orchestral posterity his epic arrangement of Pictures at an Exhibition.
