In Herbert von Karajan the lighter side of classical music found its ideal interpreter, whether of interludes and other orchestral music from operas, light and serious overtures by Rossini and Suppe, or ballets such as Gaite Parisienne, based on Offenbach's operas, and that in Gounod's Faust.
