Where 1982's 'Pornography' explored the bleaker elements of life in a dark, seething soundscape, 1984's 'The Top' showed a remarkable eclecticism, as Smith experimented with pop melodies (most notably on hit single "The Caterpillar"), exotic instruments strange tunings.
