Boris Berman was born in Moscow, Russia in the former Soviet Union. He studied piano at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory in Moscow with the great Lev Oberin where he graduated with distinction in both piano and harpsichord.

Although he enjoyed success playing in the Soviet Union, he emigrated to Israel in 1973 and eventually made his way to the United States.

He has appeared with major orchestras around the world, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony, the Israeli Philharmonic, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Berman was the Founding Director of the Music Spectrum concert series in Israel from 1975 to 1984 and of the Yale Music Spectrum series from then until 1997.

He has taught at music schools around the world including Indiana University in Bloomington, Boston University, Brandeis University, and Tel-Aviv University in Israel. He currently teaches music at the Yale School of Music, where he heads the Piano Department.
