Rosette Recording (Penguin Stereo Guide)

"Tubin wrote 10 symphonies, part of an 11th, several concerti, and quite a bit of other music. That he is very much a Romantic composer somewhat transposed into a more modern idiom may be gathered from the fact that at least 4 of his symphonies have key signatures. Tubin's music is marvelously Scandinavian in character. The Estonians are linguistically and were culturally related to the Finns. Like Finland, Estonia (Eesti) was influenced by Sweden, but not for so long a period. Danish and German influences were also felt, as well as - later - Russian. Since Estonia was ruled by some other country from about the 12th Century into the 20th, it's surprising that any sense of Estonian nationality even survived." (Epinions.com)
