"The First Symphony (1950) is a haunting and powerfully wrought piece, which grows in stature on every hearing. The Second comes from 1959, and its finale includes a setting of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, in praise of summer, with a soprano soloist. The impressive Third (1964) is well served here by David Lloyd-Jones and his Bournemouth forces. This conductor directs all three works with total conviction and real imagination. Powerful music then, splendidly played and vividly recorded, and all for a modest outlay. Good though the Lyrita recordings were, they are displaced by this newcomer." Three Stars Penguin Guide
