And the Observer remarked: "Add the elegant mezzo of von Otter, plus majestic playing from the Vienna Phil, and you have one composer of high seriousness doing another a signal service."

It was only a matter of time before this tried-and-true Mahler team turned its attention to the orchestral songs: Anne Sofie von Otter sings the Kindertotenlieder, Violeta Urmana will be heard in the Rückert Lieder and Thomas Quasthoff in the early Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.
