Year Zero

Slam is Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle. Synonymous with Glasgow's underground club scene and their own sound searching label Soma, the duo have garnered a reputation as international DJs, accomplished recording artists and respected collaborators over the course of their musical career.

Slam were nearing the end of their 'Alien Radio' tour when they shared an epiphany: feeling fired up, focused and ready to start work on their third album, the duo had rediscovered the music which enticed them to begin careers as musicians. The likes of Tom Tom Club, Funkadelic, Mantronix and urban labels such as Celluloid and Sugarhill. On 'Year Zero', Slam have re-embraced these influences, confessing to "taking a step back to go forward." Drawing something fresh from the sounds of the past.

'Year Zero' has seen Slam produce a more song-based album, utilizing the vocal talents of Dot Allison, Tyrone Palmer, Elbee Bad and Envoy, along with the legendary voices of Ann Saunderson and Billy Ray Martin. A less club influenced album, the songs carry the album - yet the warped and weird electro funk they've conjured up still seriously trouble dancefloors, recalling Sign O' The Times-era Prince and the likes of Kraftwerk. From sparkling synthetic soul to techno stompers, from timeless beats to salacious grinds, 'Year Zero' sees Slam touting the album they've always threatened to make: a record of fully realized songs and future classics. Orde sums it up: "We always try and make records that like classics. Those are the records we love."
