Welcome to the world of beat technician and musical genius Butch Cassidy! The highly anticipated debut album 'Butches Brew' is a diverse and fascinating installment of reggae bliss from the man behind the Butch Cassidy Sound System, 26-yr old musician, writer and producer, Michael Hunter. His gritty, yet harmonious style defies all genre boundaries and creates an organic sound often missing from modern reggae soundsystems.
Over the last 7 years, Michael has recorded under the name Pablo for Good Looking Records, Guidance and Fenetik. Recently he has poured his energies into the B.C.S.S. project, an idea to fuse his obsessions for rare breaks, hip hop and early 70s soul, with jazz and roots reggae, as he says: "Because nobody else has done it." The results are amazing and far more than just reggae.
Despite the main reference for the album being a firm focus on roots reggae, Michael takes the individual tracks in very different directions. 'Brothers and Sisters' is an uplifting house tempo track, while his version of The Meters classic 'Cissy Strut' is a perfect mix of funk and reggae. For the recording of the album he gathered as many vintage instruments as he could find, played them all himself and mastered the album from two inch metal tape to achieve the authenticity of sound he wanted - a very authentic, analog sounding, organic roots record.
"As familiar as an old friend but also unmistakably a fresh, post-modern take on the dubwise canvas, 'Butches Brew' is truly a heady libation."
