Libor Pešek, born in Prague, recorded this rich collection of works by Dvoƙák with two orchestras that are closely linked with his name: the Czech Philharmonic, a natural choice for this repertoire, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Pešek, who spent 11 years as Music Director in Liverpool, voiced his admiration for the British players' "immense interest in Czech music", their "dedication to the score" and their capacity for playing "in the Czech manner".

"(In the Scherzo) the Czech blood rises, the cross-rhythms stamp home and one glimpses something of the genuine article. I like his fresh and very personal characterization in the Trio here: a folksy lilt in the phrasing and subtle shading in the dynamics where Dvorak's tantalizing trills in the violins are coyly answered by clarinets and flutes. In marked contrast to that, the first movement sounds curiously anonymous. It simply doesn't come off the page. Granted it is efficiently and unfussily paced: no untoward slowing over the second subject in the flute, though surely the music must seem to relax and 'take the air' at this point." (Gramophone Magazine on Symphony No 9)
