His ability to create charming images of a surreal world with his abstract lyrics, abnormal time signatures, and inimitable vocals is like no other current artist.

Singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart is still relatively new to the world, which finds most people comparing him to a surplus of other musicians. Banhart has drawn an unusual mix of comparisons: Billie Holiday, Beck, Tiny Tim amongst others. Yet his ability to create charming images of a surreal world with his abstract lyrics, abnormal time signatures, and inimitable vocals is like no other current artist. Banhart's voice is so distinguishable that he will find himself in a similar league with some of music's all-time great distinctive voices.

Every song on Devendra's new album 'Rejoicing in the Hands' is a folk music gem, and the combination of his guitar plucking and trembling voice provides an emotional weight to this album that few previous lo-fi recordings have come close to achieving. Whether it is the dramatic "Fall" or the gorgeous "Todo Los Dolores" there is something for everyone on this album.

'Rejoicing in the Hands' includes 16 of the 32 lo-fi tracks recorded in the living room of veteran recording engineer Lynn Bridges. The remaining 16 will be released on a separate album later in 2004.
