"The lute works of Vivaldi are well-trodden territory, but no one has yet travelled over it so beguilingly as Jakob Lindberg (again), with Nils-Erik Sparf, Monica Huggett and the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble." (Gramophone)

This CD contains the entire list of works by Antonio Vivaldi for the lute. But which lute was it for? The naming of instruments often varied from country to country, and even from composer to composer, during this period.

Jakob Lindberg has here opted for the arciliuto or archlute - and pleads his case eloquently in these attractive works. Making music with him are Monica Huggett and Nils-Erik Sparf - both players with a rare reputation - as well as the indomitable Drottningholm Baroque
Ensemble.

For this release, the playing time has been increased by
adding two works which will adds new light on the lute during this period.

Giovanni Zamboni published his Sonata in C (actually a suite of dance movements) in 1718, some ten years earlier than the Vivaldi works were written - thus giving an idea of what a contemporary solo work by an Italian composer might sound like. And Bach's Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, also for lute solo - here performed on the baroque lute
preferred in Germany - shows how the instrument was used in the parallell, polyphonic tradition.
