This twenty-ninth volume in The Hyperion Schubert Edition features fifteen songs sung by Marjana Lipov∫ek, as well as the twenty-minute epic Einsamkeit sung by Nathan Berg; this is considered to be Schubert's answer to Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte cycle and is a true masterpiece.
The remaining songs are from 1819 and 1820. Schubert was travelling Europe at this time and there are many diverse influences to be perceived in the songs. Perhaps of greatest interest are the settings of 'Novalis' (pseudonym of Friedrich Leopold, Freiherr von Hardenberg); the four Hymns and Nachthymne contain a bizarre mix of eroticism and pietism, being superficially religious tracts, but more probably love poems to his dead beloved. Schubert's settings honour the spirit.
