This seven CD Decca release brings together Schumann's solo works in recordings Ashkenazy made earlier in his career.

Vladimir Ashkenazy recorded the majority of Schuman's solo piano works during the 1980s and 1990s. Dating from 1965 and just three years after winning joint first prize at the 1962 Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition, Ashkenazy's readings of the Sinfonische Etüden (which also includes the five posthumous studies) and Fantasie are full of the energy and dynamism of a young pianist at the very height of his powers (Ashkenazy was just 28 when these recordings were made). The recordings of Kreisleriana and Humoreske were made seven years later and further confirmed Ashkenazy's status as an important interpreter of Schumann.
