Stax Records is critical in music history as it's one of the most popular soul music record labels ever- second only to Motown in sales and influence but first in gritty, raw, stripped-down soul music.

Stax began life as Satellite Record in Soulsville, Memphis USA in 1959, founded by Jim Stewart, a former country fiddler, and Estelle Axton. In the ensuing 15 years Stax placed over 167 hit songs in the top 100 on the US pop charts and an astounding 243 hits in the top 100 US R & B charts.

Stax launched the careers of major pop soul stars like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla and Rufus Thomas, Booker T & The MG's (The Stax house band) and 70's soul superstar, Isaac Hayes, and Stax songs have become part of the pop music vernacular.

"Green Onions," "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay," "Soul Man," "I'll Take You There," "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "Theme from Shaft" are classic radio staples that are instantly recognisable by music fans and casual listeners alike, all over the world.

Stax outlasted most record labels-thriving from 1959-1975 and releasing an amazing number of lps and 45s-almost 300 lps and over 800 singles.

Stax's influence can still be felt 40 years later in r&b, soul, rock, pop, jazz, rap, hip-hop, & gospel music.

Stax are now re-issuing a selection of their classic albums, all 24 Bit remastered and with wonderful sleeves and liner notes. Specially priced too!
