A year before Mendelssohn's death, he was commissioned to write a work for the 1846 Birmingham Music Festival. With its lovely solos and superb choral writing, Elijah was an immediate success, and it has been a favourite with choral societies throughout the world ever since. This recording set the benchmark from its first issue in 1968.
