BBC Music Magazine
Orchestral Choice - May 2007

Mstislav Rostropovich passed away on Friday April 27th 2007 aged 80. Rostropovich was one of the truly charismatic artists of our age. This set is a comprehensive selection of his recordings as soloist, conductor and chamber-music player.

Brought together here for the first time in a single 8-CD box are all his concerto recordings for the label, as well as his symphonic and ballet repertoire, plus chamber music with Martha Argerich (Chopin, Schumann), Rudolf Serkin (Brahms), and the Emerson String Quartet (Schubert Quintet)

This album includes a new booklet article and delightful photos of the maestro with his musical partners.

Back in the catalogue are the early concertos of Vivaldi, Tartini and Boccherini, and the Shostakovich Second Concerto

Restored, too, are prime examples of Rostropovich's conducting talents: the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony, the Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suites, and a rare Tchaikovsky Capriccio italien.
