Cassandra Wilson
New Moon Daughter

[ Blue Note Records / CD ]

Release Date: Friday 19 April 1996

Not only are Wilson's performances great, but the musical settings imaginative, making use of non-jazz artists like Chris Whitley and Gib Wharton to provide unusual and appropriate ambiences. Very fine indeed!

"Yet another reason to regard Cassandra Wilson as the most accomplished of modern jazz vocalists, a label that may not do justice to Wilson when one considers the diversity of the material she covers on her secondnd Blue Note album.

Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" is covered in spine-chilling style and equally potent are a rendition of "Delta Blues", Sun House's "Death Letter" and Robert Johnson's "32-20". Other quintessential American songwriters get looked up too: Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonely I Could Cry", Hoagy Carmichael's "Skylark", Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" and a make-over of the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville" are all exceptionally fine.

Not only are Wilson's performances great, but the musical settings imaginative, making use of non-jazz artists like Chris Whitley and Gib Wharton to provide unusual and appropriate ambiences. Very fine indeed!"
